ITD Canal Bridges Replacement

The ‘A’ Canal bridges are located on Interstate 84 three miles east of Heyburn in Minidoka County. The two bridges allow the four lanes of I-84 to cross over the “Lateral 'A' Canal” and its access roads.

Why is the Project Needed?

Built in 1961, the bridges are now more than 60 years old and need to be replaced. Building new bridges is an important step toward modernizing the corridor to meet current needs and accommodate future traffic demands.

Larger shoulders will provide more space for emergency services and a secure area for any disabled or damaged vehicles to pull over. This also prevents lane closures during future repair projects, reduces the risk of rear-end collisions and increases driver comfort.
Building within the existing right of way means ITD won’t need to purchase additional property.
Wider westbound bridge will accommodate future transportation needs, saving costs in the long term.

Canal bridges, three quarter perspective

Fall/Winter 2027

When construction begins, traffic will remain on the existing lanes, but the speed limit will be reduced to 65 mph for the safety of both drivers and construction workers. Work will begin by building part of the new westbound bridge in the median.

Summer 2028 / Eastbound Traffic Shift

Eastbound traffic will shift temporarily onto the newly constructed westbound bridge while the eastbound bridge is rebuilt.

Spring 2029 / Westbound Traffic Shift

Eastbound traffic will move onto the new eastbound bridge. Westbound traffic will shift slightly to the south while the rest of the westbound bridge is constructed.
